How to Upgrade After Forgetting Master Password
The master password is created for every installation of 1Password touch on first launch, as shown here:

1Password touch uses this Master Password to encrypt the data and therefore it is not optional. Version 2.0 of 1Password touch performs an upgrade on the encrypted database and this is why it is necessary to type in your Master Password when upgrading from an older version of the 1Password touch application. This is regardless of whether or not the option to require the Master Password to view an item (High Security) is enabled for any or all items in the database.
In version 2.0, it is not possible to begin using 1Password touch without specifying the unlock code and Master Password. If you have forgotten your Master Password and have already updated from version 1.x to 2.0, you have a few options for upgrading your database without your Master Password.
A. If you use the desktop version of 1Password and all of your data is there:
Delete the 1Password touch application from your device Download and install 1Password touch 2.0 from the App Store Start the application and create a new PIN and Master Password
Sync the data from the desktop version of 1Password to the new 1Password touch install.
B. If you are not using the desktop version of 1Password or do not have all the necessary data there then you can restore your iTunes backup.
Please note that you may need to make some changes in the iTunes preferences when doing this in order to prevent data loss so please make sure you follow the process exactly as given and do not plug in your device to your computer until reading the following information.
Process for restoring an iTunes backup without it creating a new backup first:
When you connect your iPhone to your computer, iTunes automatically overwrites the existing backup with a new one. If you just lost your data on the device, this will effectively delete your previous backup from iTunes.
To prevent this, you need to do the following:
- Disable automatic syncing for your iPhone in iTunes’ preferences before you connect the iPhone again (iTunes > Preferences > Syncing > Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods).
- Connect your iPhone and wait until it appears in the iTunes sidebar. Since syncing is disabled, iTunes won’t back up your data automatically.
- Right-click (or control click) on the iPhone and select “Restore from backup”.
If you have already overwritten the previous backup then you would need to use Time Machine or your other preferred backup/restore application to restore the following folder to you Mac to a version that exists before the most recent backup was done with 1Password touch 2.0 installed:
Your_User_Name » Library » Application Support » MobileSync » Backup
Once your backup is restored, you can retrieve any information that is needed, delete the 1Password touch application from your device, and install version 2.0. However, this will require you to recreate all of your items. The other option would be to continue using the older version for now.
Perform a database upgrade without your Master Password and lose the items that were protected by it
Starting in 1Password touch 2.1, we added an option to the database upgrade process that allows you to upgrade without your Master Password. The drawback is that any items protected by your Master Password will be deleted in the process.
Upgrading your database without your Master Password is fairly simple. Just follow these steps:
- At database upgrade screen that asks for your Master Password, tap cancel.

- The next screen displays a warning that you can upgrade without your Master Password, but all entries protected by your old Master Password will be lost. If you wish to proceed, tap Upgrade. This is the second-to-last screen at which you can cancel the process.

- The third screen displays a notice that, after the upgrade, your new Master Password will be the same as your Unlock Code. We highly recommend changing your Master Password to something different after the process is complete. This screen is your last chance to cancel the process.

- The fourth screen displays your database upgrade progress. Once this finishes, your upgrade to the new 1Password touch database is complete.

We highly recommend setting your own strong Master Password in 1Password touch. This is the best way to protect your information.
