Backing Up and Restoring Your 1Password touch Data
If you use a Mac, you can use Wi-Fi or Dropbox to sync all your data with 1Password for Mac; if you use Windows, you can use Dropbox. If neither one of these is an option, we’ve built a backup function into 1Password for iOS.
Using 1Password on your iPhone or iPod touch, you can back up your data to any computer using nothing more than a web browser. To use this feature, open 1Password on your device, tap Settings > Database > Backup & Restore, and follow the on-screen instructions.
But first, a couple of quick notes about this process:
- If the process does not work in one browser, please try it in a second browser to confirm.
- Your computer and iOS device must be on the same Wi-Fi network in order to perform this backup process. Syncing via USB is not an option Apple makes available to third-party iOS apps. Only iTunes is permitted to sync via USB. Therefore, this process only works over Wi-Fi, and only if both your devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
Backup instructions in detail:
The Backup & Restore screen displays, “Launch a browser from the computer on the same network and navigate to one of the following addresses:….” and then lists two addresses that you can access from your computer.
Go to one of the addresses (they both go to the same place), and you will see a page with more instructions to “Download and keep this file for backup purposes.”
Note: If you want to use the http://your-device.local:port# format and you are using Windows, you must have Apple’s Bonjour for Windows software installed.
Click the linked file to download it to your browser’s downloads folder. You may wish to store the backup file somewhere else that is both safe and memorable in case you need to access it further in the future.
Guarding Against Data Loss
Note that it is extremely important that you back up your 1Password data before updating to new versions!
Backups are critical because sometimes things just happen, and it’s better to have your data backed up. For example, one customer synced his device with a new computer. Because it wasn’t authorized, all his applications were removed, along with their data. Another example is application updates. Normally these are uneventful; but, if something goes wrong, it’d be great to be able to easily reinstall 1Password on your device and restore your data from your computer.
If you’re using one of the desktop versions of 1Password for Mac or Windows, the easiest and quickest way to back up your data is to sync either manually (Mac only) or automatically via Dropbox because you’ll easily be able to restore your data by re-syncing.
If you’re not using one of our desktop applications, you should always create a backup before each iOS or 1Password update to ensure you have your 1Password data in the event of a problem.
Restoring Data from a Backup
In 1Password on your device, navigate to Settings > Database > Backup & Restore to begin another session, which will allow you to restore data from a previous backup.
In a web browser on your desktop computer, navigate to the address 1Password lists (it may be different from the address you used when you originally backed up your data), but this time, select the “Choose File” button to find the backup file you previously saved.
Once you’ve chosen the correct file, click the “Restore” button to restore the information to your device. 1Password will prompt you to accept the data being restored, and will then reload the database.
After restoring from a Backup, restart 1Password, and reset the Dropbox Sync
Due to the new multi-tasking system in iOS 4 and newer, it may be possible that your information isn’t visible immediately upon restoring a backup. To remedy this, either restart your iOS device or fully quit 1Password and restart it:
- Press the Home button to return to the Home screen.
- Press the Home button twice, quickly, to invoke the application switcher.
- Press one of the icons in the application switcher until they start to jiggle.
- Tap the red Close icon in the top-left corner of the 1Password icon to fully quit 1Password.
- Restart and unlock 1Password to view your data.
After restarting 1Password, reset the Dropbox sync to retrieve a new Dropbox authorization token or you will not be able to continue to sync with Dropbox. To do this:
- Open 1Password
- Go to Settings > Sync > Dropbox > Account > Reset
- Establish a new Dropbox Sync via Settings > Sync > Dropbox in 1Password
