Syncing Multiple Devices

Sync Automatically through Dropbox

We have had a lot of questions asking if you can sync 1Password across all of your devices, keeping your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and computers in sync. In order to get your iOS devices to sync directly, you will need to set up Dropbox syncing, a one-time setup process which must currently be done on a Mac or Windows machine.

Sync Manually with 1Password for Mac

Dropbox syncing is the best way to keep all your iOS devices in sync, but syncing with 1Password for Mac is the next best way. 1Password for Mac can act as a “sync middleman” for syncing data to your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, or you can use it to simply sync data between one Mac and device.

Backup & Restore between Devices

If you are not a 1Password for Mac user, you can use 1Password’s Backup & Restore function to back up your 1Password data from one device to your Mac or PC and then restore it to the 1Password app on another iOS-based device. Note that the master password from the “backed up” device will be transferred along with the 1Password data to the “restored to” device.

NOTE: Going from an iPad to an iPhone or iPod touch, both the master password and the unlock code will be replaced. That means if you’re backing up the 1Password data on your iPad and restoring it to an iPhone or iPod touch, there’s one extra step, and it’s really important: before you do the backup from your iPad, you must change the master password (Settings > Security > Change Master Password) on your iPad to a four-digit number, using only 0 through 9. When you restore the backed up data to your iPhone or iPod touch, the unlock code and the master password for the 1Password app on that device will be set to that same four-digit number. You can change the unlock code, if you like, and the master password as soon as the restore is complete. And don’t forget to reset the master password on your iPad to something much stronger as well.
