Copying and pasting username and password
We think the “auto-type” feature opens up whole new vistas of 1Password usefulness. See What if I don’t want to use the Clipboard? (Auto-Type) for details.
If you prefer to go “old school”, though, there are a couple of ways to use the Windows Clipboard to get your username and password from 1Password to a form on which Ctrl+\ can’t be used.
Copy to Clipboard icons
When you select the Logins vault or a folder, and you select one of the listed Logins, that Login appears in the details area (the lower right quadrant of the 1Password window).
Next to the username and password fields are two “Copy to Clipboard” icons. Click either of them to copy the value in the corresponding field to the Clipboard. You can then paste it wherever it’s needed.

Keyboard shortcuts
When a Login item is selected in the list area, there are some handy keyboard shortcuts, too:
-
Press Ctrl+C once to copy the value in the item’s password field to the Clipboard.
-
Press Ctrl+C twice to copy the value in the item’s username field to the Clipboard.
See What do the keyboard shortcuts do? for related information.
Related options
The Security tab of 1Password preferences includes several options that you can use to control the retention of copied credentials on the Clipboard. Enable them if you’re concerned about the possibility of Clipboard-reading software capturing the contents of the Clipboard:
-
Clear values copied to the clipboard after N seconds
-
Clear the clipboard on exit
-
Clear the clipboard on minimize
There’s also a “convenience” option related to use of the Clipboard:
- Minimize 1Password upon Copy to Clipboard (Ctrl+C)
