Changing your master password
1Password uses your master password to lock and encrypt your 1Password data, but you can change the master password at any time. Just follow these steps:
-
Make a copy of your data file, and store it in a safe place.
While not required, this could be a life saver if you ever forget your new password.
-
On the Security tab of 1Password preferences, click the Change Master Password button; then follow the instructions.
Important: If you’re using Dropbox to sync your 1Password data with 1Password on other computers and devices:
-
You’ll need to use the new master password to unlock 1Password on the other Dropbox-sync’ed computers (Mac and Windows).
-
You’ll need to update the Dropbox sync setup in the 1Password app on your mobile devices to use the new master password. (See the user’s guides for the 1Password apps for instructions.)
-
The master password used to unlock the 1Password app on your mobile devices will not change.
Master Passwords should rarely be changed
Only change your Master Password if it is weak and needs to be made stronger or if it is also used for something else. Your 1Password Master Password isn’t like a typical Login password, and so security advice that tells people to change passwords regularly does not apply to things like your 1Password Master Password.
In technical terms your 1Password Master Password is an encryption password instead of an authentication password; the advice used for one does not apply to the other. Once you have a strong, memorable, and unique Master Password you should not change it.
