Using the auto-type feature

1Password for Windows includes an “auto-type” feature for filling in your username and password without using the Clipboard. You can even use it with programs that aren’t web browsers. You just need to have a Login item saved with the username and password.

Once you do, though, just follow these steps:

  1. In your browser or other program, display the login form, and place the insertion point in the username field.

  2. Launch 1Password, select the Login you want to use, and click the Auto-Type tool (next to the Find tool in the 1Password toolbar).

  3. Click the OK button in the message that appears. (You can choose not to see the message again, if you like.)

1Password fills in the stored username and password values and (optionally) submits the form.

  4. If the Auto-Submit option is disabled (in the dialog box that appears when you click the 1Password button in your browser’s toolbar), you’ll need to submit the login page.

Not all programs accept data formatted in this way

If the “one-click” auto-type method doesn’t fill in the form correctly, you can fill in the fields one at a time:

  1. In your browser or other program, display the login form, and place the insertion point in the username field.

  2. Launch 1Password, select the Login you want to use, and click the auto-type icon next to the Username field.

  3. Click the OK button in the message that appears.

  4. Back on the login page, place the insertion point in the password field.

  5. In 1Password, click the auto-type icon next to the Password field.

Auto-type works with Account items, too

AOL Instant Messenger makes a familiar example, but you may not actually need to create a Login item for software (like AIM) that doesn’t use your web browser. You can use field-level auto-fill with Account items, too.

You can even use auto-type in the extensions for Internet Explorer and Firefox

If you have a Login item for a site that 1Password can’t fill using its normal method, just edit the item, enable its Auto-Type option, and save the item.

When you visit the site in your web browser, place the insertion point in the username field; then press Ctrl+\ as usual. 1Password will fill in the username and password fields with the values saved in the corresponding Login item.

Note: You must place the insertion point in the username field before invoking the 1Password extension; otherwise, 1Password won’t fill in the fields.
