1Password Preferences: Keychain (OS X Format)
The 1Password keychain has several options that can be configured in the 1Password > Preferences > Keychain window.
Location
All your confidential information is stored in a Mac OS X keychain file, encrypted using your Master Password. The file is named 1Password.keychain and stored in the Home > Library > Keychains folder.
Keychain Settings
The 1Password keychain preferences can be customized, allowing you to configure the automatic locking of the keychain as well as MobileMe synchronization settings. Clicking Change Auto-Lock and MobileMe Settings… will reveal the Keychain Settings window.
The Lock after N minutes of inactivity setting causes 1Password to automatically lock the keychain after a selected period of inactivity. The keychain will lock after 60 minutes of inactivity by default.
Note: The inactivity timeout is based on keychain usage. Using the mouse and keyboard is not considered activity.
Changing the Master Password
The Master Password (keychain password) is managed by Mac OS X and the 1Password application cannot change the password using OS X’s Keychain Services. To change your Master Password:
- Click Change Master Password to launch OS X’s Keychain Access utility
- Select the 1Password keychain in the list
- Click Edit > Change Password for Keychain “1Password”

In the Change Password window, enter your current Master Password and then enter your new password. After changing the password, you will need to restart 1Password and your web browsers to complete the process.
Automatically Lock
The keychain can be automatically locked when the 1Password application closes. This is not recommended if you are using the browser integration features of 1Password since you will need to unlock the keychain before accessing it in the browser.
